Once upon a time, in a parallel universe, I thought that I could make the first born a granny square blanket...exhibit A:
I told you she was putting on the pressure for me to actually finish it here. I know how this mothering gig works; I do as I'm told, most of the time, and so I started to put the squares together...there were lots of them...no granny square skimpiness in the tranquil townhouse. Exhibit B:
But alas, my skills, such as they are, did not stretch to putting the squares together in a way that pleased the eye, or quite possibly any other part of one's anatomy...exhibit C. Plain ugly. Puckered. Nasty.
So, what does any slightly competitive, I'm not going to let anything beat me kind of person do? They give up, that's what they do...and start another one. Exhibit D:
Early days but I'm much happier with this one. The firstborn however will quite likely have to wait until next winter to wrap up in this ripply goodness. Blanket recipe found over at Lucy's. Should have gone there in the first place. Clearly.
Creative spaces over here...
all photos by me; sorry for the slightly disturbing one.

I hate when I have a craft fail! Especially one that takes lots of time and effort. BUT you have really cute shoes and a new project that looks great...! I love the color combo.
ReplyDeleteI think that first granny square blanket could be a good 'ruffle blanket' - start a new style of deliberate puckers for added effect!
ReplyDeleteI can't crochet and have forgotton how to knit - so it's all impressive to me!!

I'm sure exhibit C would still be warm and cozy - your new creation looks lovely. Suz
ReplyDeleteI feel for you. There's a good tutorial for putting together granny squares over at Attic24 as well. No puckering involved - and if I can do it anyone can. Believe me!
ReplyDeleteI also made a ripple blanket - soooo satisfying as there's no joining up at the end.
There must be a way of using the first ones- someone will give you advice here as I'm no help at all. I'm loving the look of the latest one though, it's going to ve a treasure!
ReplyDeleteAttic 24 really is the crochet go-to, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteI love your colours in your first granny square one - I think it's lovely even with your aforementioned puckers!
ReplyDeleteI am yet to try a ripple - is it easy?
Bummer, don't you hate it when it doesn't work as planned but I am LOVING the new one SO much, so cool. You know I've asked this before but can you adopt me Kerry? :)
ReplyDeleteJxx
Oh dear... such a pity the first one didn't work out :( But I love how No. 2 is looking... gorgeous :)
ReplyDeleteI can't crochet to save myself, so I think Exhibit C looks great Kerry! It's made with love so it wouldn't matter if its not perfect (althought it looks near perfect to me!!). I'm loving the colours of the second attempt too :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a pain having to start again but I love the ripple look pattern!! x
ReplyDeleteAh well, chalk it up to experience maybe? And I'm sure the firstborn will cope :) I can see the first attempt all in white (surprised?) and I think the puckering would only add to the look. K xx
ReplyDeleteI think you've mastered that ripply goodness. Maybe you could undo the stitching of the granny blanket and make it a scarf? Enjoy your crocheting.:)
ReplyDeleteKerry, did you try blocking exhibit A, that might have banished the puckers. I am loving the ripple though and admire your gusto, ripple is not an easy thing to master i feel.
ReplyDeleteIf all goes pear shaped, make a tea cosy, I did and am loving it. And, isn't Attic 24 just divine. Lucy is one clever lady.
love the rippling goodnes, wish I had made one when my kids were small!
ReplyDeleteAdorable project! Wish you a creative day! Eva
ReplyDeleteHow disappointing. The second one is looking great though!
ReplyDeleteCraft fails are the worst! I hate it when that happens but I'm glad you didn't give up and went at it again. The second attempt looks ravishing. I'm loving the color palette.

Hi Kerry..by the look of it..it seems that only the last row of those squares was making it pucker as the grey seems to be tight or something..not enough stitches?? They may be rescuable(??) if they haven't all been undone.
ReplyDeleteWe can only learn by failing ( once in a while :)) xxx
ReplyDeleteIsn't that when you start telling yourself you've actually created something "new" ? Most of my favourite handmades are different from the usual, that's what makes them interesting! I kinda like your blanket...x
ReplyDeleteCrochet fail sucks, but I am sure you could turn your gorgeous granny squares into other little items? Your gorgeous new ripple throw is divine!! I can't wait to see it finished...your Jess is one lucky girl! Happy weekend to you ~ Txx
ReplyDeleteoh darl, not so epic! at least you get kudos for giving it a go, my hook and thread are scrunched up in some random spotlight bag at the back of the linen press, never used, and never likely to be again. (i watched so many you tube clips to try and learn how to make a freakin granny square that it drove me mental and i gave up!)
ReplyDeletehope you've had a great weekend so far darl - one with no work involved!! jxx
Oh, it takes so long to knit all those granny squares...hopefully, you won't give up on them yet :-) But the new pattern looks great!
ReplyDeleteOoh I love lucys ripple pattern! I just finished one myself!
ReplyDeleteHave you seen her method of joining grannysquares as you go? I found it gave quite a nice finish :D
