exhibitions from the foto biennale...

The lovely Rachael left me a comment  the other day saying 'you do love your exhibitions!'. And it's true...I do. I definitely do.

While we didn't get close to seeing all 72 exhibitions when we went to the Foto Biennale in Ballarat a few weeks ago, we did manage a few. There was a brilliant retrospective of Brian Duffy, who died last year and was almost as famous as his famous subjects...

The next is by one of Richard's portfolio reviewers Cynthia Karalla...
We met the next photographer Heather Dinas when we were having breakfast at the Bibo cafe. She was lovely. Just as an aside, Richard chose 'the dog's breakfast' from the menu!

The next one by Judith Crispin, who is also a poet really captivated me...
 judith crispin - self diptych
judith crispin - soliloquy
judith crispin - afternoon of the cartographer
...and while I was looking at them I had a discussion with a photographer who'd also been having her work reviewed, about how I thought it was the height of laziness for an artist to label an image 'untitled'. And then she told me that's what she did! But she was very good about it and promised to think about what I'd said and why I thought titles were so important. I wonder if she went off muttering to herself about ill informed, amateur art critics! Probably. But, you know, it's all about the words for me, and how they can enhance the visual. Although I do concede that it's probably very easy to get it wrong.
Love, love, love these next ones by Lisa M Robinson. It's not often that the bloke I and agree on art, but we did with these from the Snowbound series...
 lisa m robinson - phantom
lisa m robinson - verandah view
lisa m robinson - running fence
lisa m robinson - echo
alfred 'greg' gregory - blackpool
There's still a few more weeks of the festival. Or if you can't get there, plenty of images on the website.
What do you think - titled or untitled?
Have a great weekend whatever it is you're doing...I might just go to another exhibition :))

  1. What brilliant images Kerry. I love the moodiness of them. I must say that for some reason I get a bit bothered when I'm hanging a show and the artists' work is untitled. I make their catalogues too and I always prefer a title. Having said that, I hate trying to come up with titles. Sometimes a title will come to me before I make an artwork, but if I title it after it's made I always angst over it.
Thanks for showing these great images and have a great weekend! X

  2. there's some amazing images there. with you on the robinson ones, and i love the crispin as well.

i shorten every part of the english language that i can usually, because my brain is impatient.

I fear i'd possibly be an "untitled" person too!
have a great weekend darl xxx

  3. I mainly like untitled then it is left up to the viewer to make their own interpretation. I have a vivid imagination and quickly will make up my own story about what is happening. Because I am also rather visual,(and maybe have a short attention span) I like to know what is happening in a glance.
The exhibition looks like it was great.

  4. Hi Kerry,
I love photography exhibitions. These are wonderful and, the 'titled' or 'untitled' debate ? I don't really mind, as it's the actual photograph that is the most important part for me.
Here's hoping you find lots more exhibitions to visit this weekend and lots more dog's breakfasts for Richard !! haha XXXX

  8. haha! i like your rant about titling the pieces! i feel like i can understand untitled, but it usually has less impact on me if it's untitled. my brain just puts it into the closet containing a vast sea of untitled, and it's impossible to differentiate or recall it later. especially if you're like me, without the greatest memory.
