turn your radio on...

I don't listen to the radio much. Mostly it will be when I'm in the car and occasionally on the weekend. And as a sign of I know not what, these days it's permanently tuned to ABC Radio National, not to JJJ or a commercial radio station as in days of old. Is this a sign of my age? Probably.
But I've heard some wonderfully interesting things in the last week and I'm determined to turn on the radio a lot more.  I've learned (or been reminded) that:

  • lifts are the most unsociable places you can find yourself in (there's a short story that's slowly, slowly taking shape in my mind about this)
  • people live in very small homes quite happily, and apparently the 'not so big' house movement is the antidote to the McMansions epidemic. But, Australian houses lead the world in size - double the size of a house in Denmark but also bigger than American houses - that really surprised me. And, get this...the amount of space we take up as individuals is equivalent to 2.5 tennis courts (that includes roads, housing, hospitals, employment). Hell, why aren't we all Roger Federer then? As a comparison, Parisians take up just over one court and Londoners a mere three quarters. Interesting.
  • there's much pleasure to be gained in listening to someone read you a short story...back to our infancy perhaps?
  • if you're planning to build a skyscraper don't bother with more than 50 floors - above this and you drastically reduce your return on investment (so glad I found that out!)
  • I'd really love to see the Aboriginal opera Pecan Summer, inspired by the first mass strike of Aboriginal people in this country - something I knew nothing about - shame on our education system.
  • losing weight is not as straightforward as we think - less calories, more exercise is only a small part of the solution; if you engage others in helping you lose weight you're more likely to be successful; and if you're an all or nothing, black and white thinker you're much more likely to regain the weight you've lost. Be flexible about the amount of weight you can reasonably lose seems to be the message. If only it were that easy :)
And there were a few wonderful hours yesterday morning listening to the live broadcast from the Brisbane Writers Festival. Are you a radio listener or is it the TV that turns you on? Or perhaps you're happiest with the wonderful sounds of silence?

  1. A big yes to radio, which doesn't demand our rapt attention as insistently as tv. In fact, it's more like reading a trusted book, so long as the station is right. More fascinating facts, please!

  2. Great facts kerry, maybe it could be a weekly blog post?
I only listen to the radio in the car and live the tv as company and background noise when I'm working. A bit tragic, I know. Have a great week x

  3. I recently tried to purchase an ipod docking system with a radio. It seems they generally only have FM. When I said but "why isn't there any AM? I want AM"; the young sales assistant said "what for - do you like classical music and stuff". Hmmm...
I found the house facts very interesting.

  4. I'm a RN girl through and through.
From 9-12 in the morning it's playing in the background and I subscribe to their podcasts so that if I miss a thing I can play it back later.
I've recently discovered the 'Desert Island Discs' series on the BBC and these are now my bedtime stories as I drift off to the land of Z....actually today I'm featuring the theme music from the series - how uncanny is that?

Happy day Lovely lady, I hope it's filled with lots of fabulous listening pleasure. xx Felicity

  9. BBC Radio 4! I listen to it on the internet now and though I don't really think my folks listened to it when I was a kid, it still makes me very happily nostalgic. And, yes, Felicity, Desert Island Discs is one of the best! I even love listening to the shipping news and wondering where all those weirdly named places really are ....
    Great post Kerry!

  11. I too love the radio. I always have and really enjoy the 'immediacy' that it represents. TV feels so rehearsed, and at times quite corrupt.
I too prefer the less commercial stations with lots of soothing classical music to keep me company when I paint.

    Enjoy Spring!

Lots of warm Swedish hugs for you!

    xx Charlotta

  13. i'm a CBC radio listener. lots of interesting talk and tidbits. it began when the kids were in school, something to do with aging i'm sure. When i go to the hairdresser's she always has the commercial radio station on, with annoying pop and rap, and i have to bite my lip and sit on my hands so i dont reach over and turn it off! drives me batty.

  14. I totally agree with you on the subject of the failure of our school system to address the history of our indigenous population. All I remember being taught was very basic stuff like the names of their tools/weapons and shelter. When I went to University, I was fortunate to have Henry Reynolds as a lecturer who opened my eyes to the impact of European settlement on indigenous Australians. Furthermore, Eddie Mabo was employed as a gardener, and I knew that he was a special human being, even though I wasn't aware of the role he was to play with regard to land rights. After seeing what my children studied when they were at school from 1990 - 2007, I believe that the place of indigenous Australians in this country is still largely ignored in our curriculum.
