bemused by garden stools

I have two garden stools...just like this one...
...but I'm thinking: why are they called garden stools?
Garden: a piece of ground or other space commonly with ornamental trees, plants etc, used as a place of recreation
Stool: a seat, either low or high, without arms or a back, usually for a single person..
...when you hardly ever find them in the garden and I've never seen anyone actually sit on one...
Just wondering...

Confession: ok...maybe, just maybe I did find a few images of garden stools outdoors, but no way was I going to let the facts get in the way of a blog post now was I?? Oh all right then..but just the one!

  2. Ok, so my understanding is these stools were originally used in Asia, and hot coals were placed inside or underneath to heat the seat during cold weather. Not sure I'd be throwing the fireplace out just yet, but I think you should give it a try Kerry, and let us know how it works! And that's probably why they were used in the garden - I'm just guessing, but I suppose there is a teeny tiny fire risk if you haul hot coals inside! K xx

  14. You are so right about this one! I shoot interiors and have seen these quite often, these "stools" that masquerade as side tables. They are pretty cute - better as tables, I think. I adore that kitchen - wish it were mine ;)
    Love your blog!
